Quiz for Week 2 of PFP 96

You can (and in some cases should) use Maple to help solve the problems.

You can submit your results by e-mail or via FTP or on paper

  1. The following graph shows the position vs. time for a bicyclist.

    1. What is the instantaneous velocity of the cyclist at t = 4 seconds?
    2. What is the instantaneous acceleration of the cyclist at t = 9 seconds?
    3. What is the instantaneous velocity of the cyclist when the cyclist is 80 meters from the starting position?

  2. The figure below is a Maple plot of a trignometric function, f(y). Write down the properties of the derivative, f'(y), and the second derivative, f''(y), for this function for values of the abscissa between -1 and +1 (e.g. f'(y) > 0 for 0 < y < 1, f''(y) < 0 for -1 < y < 1, etc.)

  3. For bonus points!!! Just to show your calculus mechanics prowess: Find the values of the derivative and the second derivative at x = 5*Pi for the following function:
