Preface

This Web-based text is intended for a college-level course in introductory physics. Although the principal audience is for students intending to pursue studies in the natural sciences, there is mathematics is included to a level sufficient for a course for future engineers. It is expected that students are familiar with algebra and trigonometry. Calculus topics relevant for physics study are included in the text.

In keeping with the nature of the text itself, it is also assumed that the student and instructor are familiar and comfortable with computer tools that are used extensively throughout the text. The symbolic mathematics program, Maple, is used in the lectures and is assumed to be available for use in the homework problems. Extensive tutorial aids on using Maple are available on the Web. Appropriate hyperlinks to these are available, where relevant, within the text itself, but the reader is encouraged to seek out other resources.

The text itself is part of the Logically Linking Living, Learning, and Language program and hence is referred to as L5.

Please begin your exploration of L5.
