Low-energy helium diffraction experiments have revealed that CO2 physisorbs on NaCl(001) at low temperatures to form distinct phases at low and high coverages. The structures of both phases are commensurate with the underlying NaCl(001) substrate. The low-coverage phase consists of a rectangular 1X2 unit mesh whereas the unit mesh of the high-coverage, monolayer phase is 2 sqrt(2) X 2 sqrt(2)R 45. The diffraction results and structural models are discussed in relation to recent infrared spectroscopic studies ofCO2/NaCl(001).
